- The 107-year-old Gardens have been given the green light to go ahead with the construction of a new Garden Entrance/Visitor Centre complex.

- Plans involve the partial demolition of the existing Visitor Centre and the construction of a single storey open plan to include a central courtyard area with entrance, reception area, indoor cafe with outside garden eating area, administration and staff offices, shop, exhibition room, conservatory and lecture theatre.

- A new car park and improved access to Gardens will complement the new development.

- The new centre, with an estimated completion date in mid-summer 2005 will increase the enjoyment for visitors, allow 'under cover' activities, extend the length of the visitor services and finally, but equally important ensure the viability and continuing service of one of Britain's most important Botanic Garden. The new building will be very 'green', with low energy design, extensive use of timber, and a sedum roof.

- Despite some unavoidable disruption, the Gardens will continue to open its doors to allow visitors to view the magnificent collection of Rhododendrons and Azaleas, the best in the North West of England, which should not be missed in spring and early summer, the amazing Laburnum Arch, the herbaceous borders and finally the various gardens including rock, water, herb and heather.

- Catering and toilet facilities will still be available during the reconstruction period, as will shop and plant sales.

So - watch us grow and blossom.
