Keeping it in the Family
Pity poor Pearl, who within 24 hours became a new Mum to eleven and a Granny to eight. Piglets, that is, for Pearl, a Berkshire sow at Tatton's Home Farm farrowed on the very same day as her daughter Betty.

Staff at the Farm are busy trying to figure out this complicated family tree. It is certainly a handsome one; Pearl and Betty are both Berkshires, which are primarily black in colour. Pearl's piglets were sired by 'Titan', a Tamworth, making them ginger/black and Betty's were sired by 'Eric', a Large White.

The two synchronised sows, farrowed within hours of each other on 20th February, also the birthday of Lisa Kennedy, one of the Farm Rangers! The pigs have been housed next door to each other in the piggery so Pearl can trot out any motherly advice over the gate.

Pearl and Betty were both born and raised at Home Farm and are quite the star attractions. They are often used by the staff at children's parties as they both have lovely, calm temperaments. Lisa Kennedy commented "Pearl really is the wise old lady of the piggery, being the oldest at seven years old. Both girls are extremely friendly and laid-back, and their easy-going personalities make them fantastic mums!"

With Mother's Day just around the corner, Betty can't expect Granny Pearl to piglet-sit, Pearl is one pig with her trotters already full.
