Keeping House
Only the Best for the New Look Housekeeper's Store Mrs Dodson would have been proud. As the Egerton family's Housekeeper during Tatton's heyday in the late nineteenth century, we are sure she would have approved of the beautifully refurbished Housekeeper's Store, Tatton's own speciality food shop. Officially re-opened on May 28th the extended store, now nearly twice the size of its previous incarnation, is stocked with an even greater selection of fine local and regional produce for the discerning customer. From humble beginnings as a freezer full of estate venison at Tatton Park's gate, the shop grew rapidly, relocating to its current position 14 years ago. It now sells a full range of estate produce and regional specialities, including one of the county's best selections of preserves, pickles and cheeses. Tatton's own lines are the mainstay of its success, including various cuts of prime venison from the parkland, a tasty selection of pork produced from Tatton's working farm and rare breed lamb and game from the estate. Customer favourites are Tatton's award winning sausages (as judged by the North West Fine Foods Awards 2007) - the Best Pork Sausage in the North West and the delicious venison sausage which won the Specialist Meat category. Tatton was also awarded `Best Cheshire Producer' at the same event. Of course it was Mrs Dodson's responsibility to select the finest seasonal produce from the Kitchen Gardens and meat from Tatton's estate for the family table. She also liaised closely with the lady of the house in preparing lavish menus for the Egertons and their guests. In 1887 Wilbraham, 2nd Baron Egerton of Tatton and his wife Lady Mary entertained the Prince and Princess of Wales. One can only imagine the hours of painstaking preparation which must have gone into the menus on this occasion - if only she had the ease of shopping offered in the Store today! The highest of standards are maintained today by our staff in the Housekeeper's Store. They go to great lengths to visit suppliers, observe how their food and drink is produced and gain first-hand knowledge, resulting in the best in quality, taste and service for their customers. Whether that is delicious local dairy ice cream, Cartmel's famous Sticky Toffee Pudding, Tatton's own label British wine and local beer or Tatton's range of chutneys, jams, and pickles, everything has passed their quality test. No longer the preserve of the wealthy landowner, everyone can now enjoy the selection of Farm, estate and local produce, chosen with an eye for quality, tradition and the skills of small producers. Brendan Flanagan, General Manager commented "The new Housekeepers Store's will be able to build on its already established reputation for supplying a superb range of tasty, fresh, local food and drink to both visitors to Tatton Park and local residents. This combined with the quality and service that the shop receives from its suppliers and the dedication and hard work of its enterprising staff support the enhancement of one of the region's best specialist food and drink shops". The expansion of the Store has been made possible by significant investment by Tatton Park and grant funding from the North West Development Agency through the Cheshire Rural Enterprise programme, who have recognised the tremendous value of showcasing regional produce at one of the country's top tourist attractions. |
