Something Beautiful
Stags, sculpture and 'Something Beautiful' in Tatton Park Cast your eye over the horizon of Tatton's parkland in the coming months and you may notice something a little different. For Lorna Green, an international sculptor and environmental artist, has created very special pieces for the parkland, inspired by the landscape and wildlife of the historic Deer Park. Lorna has been commissioned as part of 'Something Beautiful', a site-specific arts programme supporting Cheshire's Year of Gardens 2008. Tatton Park is one of five Cheshire gardens (including Arley Hall, Combermere Abbey, Little Moreton Hall and Ness Botanical Gardens), who will be working with a specially selected artist and providing a setting for temporary artworks. Lorna's pieces (entitled 'Spring, Summer, Autumn, 1, 2 and 3') take inspiration from the strength and beauty of Tatton's deer, her work uses timber from trees which fell in the January gales. Lorna commented "I have focused on the grandeur of the antlers and have used colour to paint these pieces, reflecting not only the changes in the antlers throughout the year but also the changing colours of the leaves during the seasons". Of course, the pieces themselves are subject to a changing, organic cycle. They will be affected by the different seasons and by Cheshire weather. Lorna commented "I hope the projects will change the viewer's perception of the surrounding landscape. The deer and sheep have already been particularly intrigued to by them!". Lorna drew considerable interest whilst at work in the parkland and a number of observant visitors stopped to ask her what she was doing. Public engagement is central to the aims of the 'Something Beautiful' programme, as Lorna commented "my job is to respond to the landscape, to create something which reflects the beauty of the place and then to leave Tatton with something which can provoke a response in others". Brendan Flanagan, General Manager commented "this is one of a number of contemporary arts projects that is giving Tatton a well deserved reputation for creativity and imaginative interpretation of landscape and place. The 'Something Beautiful' project is however wider than just Tatton Park and will make an important contribution to Cheshire's Year of Gardens as it celebrates the county's Gardens of Distinction. Lorna's wonderful pieces are in a very accessible part of the Park and have already attracted a great deal of interest from both visitors and Deer alike". Visitors to Tatton will be able to see Lorna's work near the Knutsford Gate entrance to Tatton Park. The official opening of the 'Something Beautiful' commissions takes place in March 2008. |
