Tatton's Polygamous Piggy!
One Tatton resident is tickled pink to find himself a daddy thirty times over, all during the last three weeks! Gregory, a Large White Boar at Tatton's Home Farm, has managed to charm his way into the affections of three of Tatton's prize sows. Such is his way with the ladies the polygamous piggy has fathered thirty adorable new piglets born within a matter of days this October - it's enough to make your tail curl! Jayne Chapman, Farm Co-ordinator commented "with a traditional piglet gestation period of three months, three weeks and three days, Gregory's dating diary must have been extremely busy in July!" His summer of love left the three lucky sows with synchronised due dates. Skye the Saddleback made Gregory a first-time Daddy on 3rd October with a healthy litter of 13. Tallulah the Tamworth was swift second, farrowing 11 piglets on Friday 17th October. Finally, Molly the Middle White farrowed a beautiful litter of six on Monday 21st October. No squeals of 'Who's the Daddy!?' here, as all three litters have inherited their father's Large White characteristics. But their personalities are all their mothers'. Molly's litter, her very first, seem to have inherited her very gentle manner. Her sweet nature must have come in handy when she had to vie for the attentions of gregarious Gregory: a Romeo with a girl in every pigsty! For now, Gregory has been cast out into his own quarters; the ladies' loving glances having found cuter targets in their new-born piglets. Any previous piggy envy has been replaced by a new sow sisterhood. The three ladies have been housed near or next to each other in the piggery and so there is plenty of over-the-fence advice for new Mum Molly. Visitors will be able to see our once, twice, thirty times a Daddy and his new piglets during half term week, in addition to the usual weekend opening times. Jayne commented "Don't miss out on seeing these beautiful piglets whilst they are still so young. They never fail to raise a smile on staff and visitors' faces so come down and offer your congratulations to the piggy trio of mums! If you can't make it here this time, keep an eye on their progress on the farm webcams". |
